Kate is mother to Austin and Billie Reed, Lucas Roberts, Philip Kiriakis and Cassie and Rex Brady. Kate was married to Curtis Reed and Victor Kiriakis, and is currently married to Roman Brady.

Kate Roberts and her son, Lucas, came to Salem in 1993. Kate was a successful business woman and the President of Titan Publishing. She was often found studying an old newspaper clipping which read, "Pregnant Woman found Battered on Highway". Now, Marlena seemed to know about Kate and her past. Alice Horton also remembered her as Dr. Kate Winograd the anesthesiologist who had once resided in the house were Jack and Jennifer lived on Copperlantern Drive. Jack found a journal in the attic of the house and, under an assumed name, re-wrote it as a novel. When it wound up at Titan Publishing, Kate read it and discovered it was her life story and hit it away. Kate soon moved into the Kiriakis Mansion and she and Victor started a romantic relationship.

Kate's son, Lucas, began to investigate his father's past. With the help of new found friend, Sami Brady, he learned that Kate had lied about his father being a graduate of West Point. And, that the photo he had of his father was really a fake. Trying to gain Lucas' forgiveness, Kate told him about how she had been in an abusive marriage and had two children whom she believed to be dead. Kate still hadn't told Lucas the whole truth about his father's identity and wanted to be sure he never found out. To be sure this would stay a secret, Kate often visited Laura Horton at the sanitarium to warn her to never reveal what she knew about the identity of Lucas' father.

A short time later, Kate married Victor Kiriakis at his mansion. However, Curtis Reed, Kate's supposedly dead husband resurfaced and found Kate. Curtis decided to blackmail her about her past. Shortly after her visit from Curtis, he was found dead and Billie was the prime suspect. Kate, who had still been visiting Laura at the sanitarium, discovered that Vivian Alamain was also a resident there. Vivian and Laura were becoming fast friends and this was making Kate nervous. Kate found out that Vivian had been posing as a man and sneaking out of the sanitarium. Kate immediately informed the hospital and Vivian was scheduled for a lobotomy. Before they could preform the procedure, the sanitarium caught fire. Laura and Vivian narrowly escaped with the help of Vivian's servant Ivan. While recovering in their hide-out at the Alamain Mansion, Laura figured out Kate's connection to Curtis Reed. And, Vivian decided she could use this information to possibly get Victor back.

At Billie's trial for Curtis' murder, Laura Horton burst in and revealed that he and Kate had been married. Kate had to admit that she had been married to Curtis and that he had fathered two of her children. Kate also testified that Curtis abused her, took her children away and told her they were dead. It was soon revealed that Curtis had lied about the children's deaths and that Austin and Billie were Kate's long estranged children. A very happy Vivian was glad to know this now deemed Kate's marriage to Victor invalid. And, after much persuasion, Vivian convinced Laura to tell the true identity of Lucas' father. So, at a Titan company party, Laura told all that Lucas' biological father was none other than her ex-husband, Bill Horton. Back in 1978, when Kate and Bill first became involved, it sparked several arguments between he and his wife Laura. Bill felt like Laura was spending too much time at work and neglecting him. Bill told Laura this was the reason he was taking up with Kate. Bill's medical practice began to suffer after a malpractice suit was made against him. Bill was eventually suspended from his duties at University Hospital and began drinking. He could no longer afford his bills and eventually walked out on Laura and moved in with Kate. After a few short weeks, Bill decided he loved Laura and was going to try and fix things between them. A year later, when a flood devastated a nearby town, Bill and Kate volunteered to help. Their working together sparked Laura's suspicions that something more was going on between them. Bill's affair with Kate, as well as a few other very stressful events, eventually led to Laura's commitment to the Lakewood Sanitarium.

Kate was desparate to get Victor back after the secrets of her past had been revealed. She wanted to marry Victor for real and have another child. So, Kate agreed to in-vitro fertilization. She knew that if she were to bear Victor a son, he would surly marry her again. Vivian got wise to Kate's plans and had Victor and Kate's eggs implanted in herself. Vivian further manipulated the situation and managed to move into the Kiriakis Mansion with Victor and Kate. In the wedding rehearsal for Victor's wedding to Kate, Vivian managed to actually marry him without Victor's even knowing it. Later, during Kate and Victor's ceremony, Vivian went into labor and stopped the wedding. Vivian gave birth to Kate and Victor's son, Philip. Later, Kate disappeared in a plane crash over the ocean. It turned out that Vivian was trying to drug Kate and the pilot accidentally drank the cup of coffee that was meant for Kate. He passed out during the flight and the plane crashed. Vivian and Ivan managed to get a helicopter to try and find Kate's plane out in the ocean, but were unsuccessful. And, Vivian finally had Victor all to herself. Kate was presumed dead for a year, but was actually alive and living on a fishing boat.
